Yesterday, my mother in law and I spent our day together baking fresh buns for seeding. And we made them just in time too because today officially kicked off seeding here on our farm! I grew up in a home where fresh bread and buns were pretty common and I always loved waking up to the smell of them rising and baking in my mothers kitchen. Unfortunately for one reason or another, I never actually took the time to learn this ancient craft until I was actually married myself! That being said, it has become a goal of mine to make bread and buns myself more often..especially during our farming season when lunches are made every day for the men and homemade is so much better than store bought! The recipe came from one of my husbands aunt’s and was lovingly handwritten by my MIL in her personal recipe book, which I have come to cherish whenever I get a peek inside. I love the sense of community there is when it comes to sharing recipes and cooking or baking for loved ones. Sure most people use Pinterest for their dinner ideas these days (myself included) but I love baking from a handed down recipe card, complete with the name of the original creator!

So here we are, the beginning of a new farming season for us and things are about to get busy! I love this time of year on the farm!

  • Nikala - When I first got married, I didn’t have the best luck with bread. At all. I would make a (different) mistake each time! Tasted fine, usually, but sometimes wouldn’t rise right, or spread out too much etc etc. Now however, I am proud to say I’ve got Really good at making bread! Currently we are Obsessed with no knead artisan breads. Am eating a warm slice with water right now!
Enjoy your breadmaking; it does get better!ReplyCancel

  • Linda - Oh yum they look delicious. Love your new website Dawn.ReplyCancel

The 2015 crop plan is all drawn up, any seed not on hand has been ordered, fertilizer has been delivered and our machinery has had any necessary maintenance completed for the upcoming season. Spring is so exciting on the farm, here you can actually view the world around you coming back to life. The robins, meadowlarks, ducks and Canadian geese have all returned, greenery is starting to show its face again and farms everywhere are full of the hustle and bustle that is Spring. I have many, many photos that I love of our life here on the farm but this time of year has me excited for whats to come and also has me reflecting on where we have been. Our last harvest was long and drawn out and the weather most definitely worked against us but we made it through smiling and we’re back to do it all over again! Here is a small sampling of our 2014 harvest..

March Farm Life Inspired

We arrived home from Hawaii in the first week of March and I am still blown away by how unseasonably warm it has been here this month. Normally we are still digging ourselves out from underneath a blanket of snow (which still could very well happen if I am being honest!) and here we are, the end of the month and enjoying +20 (C) weather, perennials are pushing their way up in the garden beds, robins and meadowlarks wake us up every morning with their beautiful songs and sing us to sleep again every night. The farm machinery has been brought out of storage and the boys have been working on maintaining it for another growing year and when Hudson naps, I am potting up tomato plants grown from seed and sowing more annuals on my potting bench to place out in the garden in just a few weeks! If the weather keeps up like this, we’ll be back out in the field in no time and I for one can hardly wait!! Making this month end collage was honestly such a fun time for me. I loved looking back on how much has happened in just 31 days! Every photo here is a record of my life..and I find that to be a very special thing. All I know for sure is that after compiling these collages..I am a very, very blessed woman and feel so lucky and grateful to live where I live and do what I do! Here is a closer look at March here on our farm..

as you can see, we had a mix of snow and sunshine..some days were so downright chilly you had to bundle yourself completely up just to run an outside errand while other days we could wear t-shirts outside and be completely comfortable!! Crazy weather but definitely a very full and fun month for us here!March blog book 2March blog book 3

I can’t even believe I am writing about what is growing in the garden in march. to be honest, I am kind of flabberghasted! I have never seen such an early Spring before! Sure, sometimes we get temps that are +3 and sunny but +20 for days on end? Never! The weekend had been absolutely gorgeous and with that warm temps and the Spring rain that fell, my garden now needs a good weeding as well..whaa?!? In my garden things are just poking their little green heads back up from a long winters nap but it is always such a treat for me to wander around the garden before sunset and take in everything that is new or growing well.

Last night before sunset, grandma and grandpa asked if Hudson could come play with them for a while and I happily obliged so that I could spend some time surveying my gardens. I was dumbfounded to see my strawberry patch, that was only previously covered in ice two weeks ago, is now flourishing! New greenery springing forth, huge green leaves everywhere..to say I was giddy would be an understatement! Then I proceeded to find all of my rhubarb plants not only up but already leafing out as well! Strawberries and rhubarb, could Spring get any sweeter?! In my garden I also have hundreds of perennials, some were planted by my mother in law and some were planted by myself last Spring as well. And a quick peek around the flower beds showed that almost everything is already peeking up through the dirt again..delphiniums, shrubbery, liatris, coral bells, hydrangea and even my lilacs have green buds on their tips! I cannot wait for everything to come into its own again in just a few short months.. what a beautiful sight it is!

Tomorrow is the last day of the month and then April will get crazy here on the farm. If the weather persists, we’ll be in the field in no time and I will also be working away in my garden. This year, for the 3rd year in a row, I will be planting a garden in a new spot. Last years attempt in a well lit area of poor soil reaped terrible yields for so much sweat and hard work. So this year, I am tearing up a beautiful spot of green grass and planting a garden! Today I will be rototilling the grass up and preparing the soil. The garden will be 3,000 square ft as per my usual and I have already drawn up my planting plans and cannot wait to pop some peas in the ground, hopefully before weeks end!! So here’s to the start of another growing year..I cannot wait to see how it progresses!! How about you? Is your soil ready for prepping or planting yet?! What are you growing this year?!
