Well, after a VERY long day yesterday, we made it home with a very special package. I was so nervous when we turned down the old dirt road and pulled up to the ranch. The realization that I was actually getting my chicks finally hit me and I was both ecstatic and freaked out! The lady who hatched my babies was amazing, so friendly & knowledgeable and definitely someone I will continue to deal with!!

After touring their ranch, I picked up my box of 15 lovelies and we made our way home thru the night. Thankfully, we still had about an hour left of daylight when we left so I had some time to settle in & observe the little fluffballs! They are so tiny and sweet, you barely feel them when they’re in your hands!!

Of course, I have no experience with chickens (100% newbie!) so when I first went to grab one I was skiddish and it took some pep talk from the hubs before I finally realized, “I can do this” .. and that first moment I held my chicks, changed my life. Something hit me and I fell in love..my eyes even started watering! Truly..amazing!

This is Eleanor 😉

After a long drive home we placed them in their brooder, dunked their beaks in water and watched in silent bliss as they helped themselves to water & feed for the first time..*sigh*
of course, a little drama ensued as my 5th chick I took out to move to the brooder fluttered and fell out of my hands to the ground..I was heartbroken, shocked and beyond upset with myself but, thankfully, she was just a little stunned & fully recovered quickly! Whew!!

But, they settled in…got nice and warm..and soon, fell fast asleep…

Well, my weekend didn’t work out quite as planned {surprise, surprise}
I found out on Friday that my chicks never arrived {they will be here today instead} and that changed my plans for going home to celebrate Easter with my family and take part in our annual Easter egg hunt {boo!} Pretty disappointed in how things worked out but a decent weekend none-the-less. On Friday we were hit with a major snow storm that kept me inside, happily crafting away in my studio. Saturday we lived in a winter wonderland so, of course, I made sure to capture it via my IPhone for Project Life 😉 Then yesterday, Easter, was probably the weirdest Easter of my life..pretty much felt like any other Sunday (which, if you know me, you’d know that if any holiday doesn’t live up to my expectations..I am not a happy camper). Thankfully, Adam made my day as good as he possibly could! He took me for a drive to see all the baby animals that have been arriving steadily in the last few months (calves, lambs..so cute!) .. and that..was my weekend

Our Winter Wonderland

Our 1st Easter as Newlyweds

We’ve finally started spotting robins! This one..possibly the fattest we’ve ever seen!

Enjoying the baby chick sugar cookies I made!
Have a great Monday everyone!!!

I have always idealized living in the country, even as a little girl. The idea of having a huge, peaceful yard full of flowers, vegetable gardens, children running free and animals everywhere was a huge draw to me. Of course, I grew up in the city and so these thoughts were shelved as fantasy and I continued on living my life as I thought it should be. Little did I know that I would grow up to marry a farmer who would bend over backwards to make my whimsical “life in the country” dreams come true. When Adam asked me to marry him and move to the farm to start a new life, I couldn’t have been more ecstatic.. my country life was finally going to happen! And now? I have had a few months to settle in to my new routine and its time to start bringing my country dreams to life. My first order of business?

Chickens

Yup, I have a dozen little fluffballs on their way and I am giddy with excitement! I have no idea what I am doing but I have bought & studied 6 different books, I’ve researched and asked questions and {thankfully} my hubby has his own childhood experiences that I can learn from. It’s really happening! To prepare for my little flock, the hubs and I went down to the shop last night to make the brooder that will house these little ladies for the first 6 weeks of their lives til I can move them to their coop. After researching what others did for their brooders, I came up with this

I used a 121L Rubbermaid bin that I am hoping will be large enough for 6 weeks and 12 chicks. If not, I may have to divide them in to 2 bins to keep them healthy and give them enough space for comfort

While Adam trimmed the lid with a utility knife, I was busy trimming poster board to line the floor of the brooder {makes for easier weekly clean up}

Then we attached some metal meshing to the lid so the heat lamp can still provide all the heat necessary but keep my girls safe inside from the puppies as well as keep them from flying out on their own accord

And when the lid was complete, it was time to add the pine shavings to the floor

Now, all that’s left is adding my little waterer and feeder {and of course the heat lamp} and my chicks’ new home will be waiting for them! I will be getting my ladies on Sunday so you can be sure I will blog about them next week..I can’t wait!! Until then, my Jakey has been appointed guardian of our flock…and already I think he’s taking his job pretty seriously…

Have a wonderful Easter weekend everyone..can’t wait to introduce my ladies to you next week!!

Its the 4th day of April, can you believe it? Pretty soon the boys will be out in the field seeding and I will be out in my very own garden, planting away! I can hardly wait. January, February {and now} March have all flown by insanely quickly but as the days get longer and the nights get warmer, you won’t hear any complaints from me!!

To mark the 4th day of April, I thought I’d let you in on 4 random tidbits:

1) I am receiving a very special delivery this weekend that I am absolutely giddy about. Any guesses? Here’s a hint:
  a very noisy package will be shipped thru the post office to get this delivery to me..

2) We are about 10 days away from starting seeding..and things are starting to get crazy busy around here because of it!

3) The Titanic in 3D comes out today and I really, really want to go and see it!! Anyone else?!?
4) I went to my very first farm auction sale yesterday and loved it! Of course most of the day was kind of long and boring..but at the very end..I came home with these vintage creamers!! I {heart} them
Have a great Wednesday everyone!
